"A woods man looks at twenty miles of prairie and sees nothing but grass, but a prairie man looks at a square foot and sees a universe" - Bill Holm
I am definitely a prairie man. In his essay, Horizontal Grandeur, Holm encapsulates what it is to love the endless landscape of western Minnesota into South Dakota, the same landscape I was born into and, with the exception of about eighteen months, where I continue to live. Born in a small town in 1960, my family moved to Odessa when I was a year old. I've never felt the need or had the urge to leave here.
My universe is right here on the edge of open sky and unending grasslands. I've been married to my wife Sally since 1985 and we have raised two kids who mostly enjoyed growing up in a small town. While some might think there is not much to see or, even less to do here and that small town life is boring, I can't say that I've ever felt it. What I see around me here has shaped my life and taught me more about who I am and how the world works than any place else I can imagine.
